- Persons contemplating suicide may have a total loss of self-esteem and self-worth
- What are some warning signs that ming be shown by a person who is suicidal?
- A suicidal person may:
- Talk about it or hint about it
- Seem to be reaching out for help
- Reject all help — be totally negative
- Seem to have given up — is ready to quit
- Have nothing to look forward to or live for
- Be in tremendous mental or physical pain
- Have had a severe, long-term depression
- Have become completely isolated
- Have lost important persons(s) in their life
- Have lost status, position, or valuable possessions
- Have suffered a huge rejection
- Have begun to embrace alcohol or drugs
- Be putting their life in order by planning the dispersal of possessions
- Be suddenly contacting old acquaintances and friends
- Have a flat effect or hav gone to extremem calmness
- Self-mutilate
- Be unable to laugh, smil, or talk
Strategies for preventing suicides
- Are suicides planned?
- Embrace WRAP concepts
- Use wellness tools appropriate to you
- Develop and follow your WRAP Plans:
- Treat symptoms early
- Have adequate support
- Have a crisis plan—distributed
- Have and utilize health care professionals
- Continue taking medications as prescribed
- Never stockpile medications
- Never be alone when having suicidal thoughts
- Avoid dangers—alcohol, drugs, weapons, car keys, cash or credit cards
- Have pictures of your loved ones near you.
- Have something to look forward to
- Focus on the buture—even if only on the next day.
If you suspect a person is suicidal, you need to take action — It may be necessary to save their life!
